For some reason one day Sanchita poured varnish onto a piece of paper and this formed the basis of these pastel works, the varnish gave the paper a waxy quality, she’d also read that Degas used pastel on tracing paper. She still believes that the portrait she did of the old lady, based on a small image she saw in the Guardian newspaper, when she was twenty-one years old, is one of her best pieces. She is still trying to recreate that moment.
